Is it simply the exhaustion of a long rebuilding year, or does relief tell us something about the relationship between supporters and the football they are being asked to keep believing in?
What exactly were supporters relieved to escape — the losses, the uncertainty, the weekly explanations, the injuries, the lack of visible progress, or the emotional work of trying to identify what Richmond was becoming?
And how should a club read that mood? Does supporter fatigue automatically mean faith in the rebuild has gone, or can people remain committed to Richmond while becoming tired of the experience surrounding the football?
There is another complication. A rebuild needs patience, but patience is not an unlimited resource. What replenishes it? Is it wins, clearer football, emerging players, stronger communication, visible standards — or simply evidence that tomorrow is becoming easier to imagine than today?
What should Richmond want supporters to feel when the 2027 season begins? Excitement? Curiosity? Trust? And what would the club need to show before relief at the end of one season becomes anticipation for the start of the next?
