Richmond’s 1967 premiership was the first flag of a dynasty in retrospect, but at the time it was better understood as the successful conclusion of a rebuild. The Tigers had broken a 24-year premiership drought, returned to finals after two decades away, and created the belief, standards and core playing group that later powered flags in 1969, 1973 and 1974.

But 1967 did not make Richmond permanently dominant.

The next season proved that. Richmond won 14 home-and-away matches in 1968 and still missed the finals under the old top-four system. The club had discovered how good it could be; it had not yet learned how to sustain that standard every year. The dynasty required renewal, ruthless selection, further player development and a willingness to begin again after success.

That is what makes 1967 so important.

It was not merely a premiership.

It was the season in which Richmond became capable of building premierships.

A flag that changed the club

Richmond’s 1967 premiership ended one of the longest waits in VFL football.

The Tigers had last won a flag in 1943, when Jack Dyer captained a side coached by Len Smith. That premiership had come during wartime. It belonged to a different Richmond, a different VFL and a different social world. The club played at Punt Road. It had Dyer at the centre of its identity. Its supporters knew the club could win because they had seen it happen.

Then the waiting began.

Richmond lost the 1944 Grand Final. It played finals in 1945, 1947 and then not again for twenty years. The club produced good players. It had periods of promise. It had passionate members and a large supporter base. But it did not produce another senior premiership.

By the early 1960s, the drought had become more than a statistic.

It had become part of the Richmond experience.

The Tigers had finished last in 1960. They had been unstable in the early years of the decade. They had not become irrelevant, because Richmond could never be irrelevant to its supporters, but they had become unreliable. The club needed more than a better season. It needed a different structure.

The 1967 flag was the reward for that restructuring.

It was also the proof that the restructure had worked.

A premiership validates decisions that have previously looked risky, expensive or merely hopeful. Richmond’s move toward the MCG as a home venue had demanded ambition. Its investment in coaching, fitness, recruiting and player development had required patience. Tom Hafey’s rise from reserves coach to senior coach had required faith in a man who did not arrive with the public profile of an established league coaching figure.

The flag changed the way all of those decisions were seen.

After 1967, Richmond was no longer a club trying to become modern.

It had demonstrated that it could be.

The rebuild had begun before Hafey

The story of Richmond’s 1967 premiership is often told as though Tom Hafey arrived and immediately transformed everything.

Hafey was central. That does not mean he did it alone.

The rebuild had begun through decisions made above and around the senior team. Richmond’s administration had recognised that the club could not remain competitive simply by preserving old habits. It needed to increase its visibility, broaden its appeal, improve its football operation and take itself more seriously as a major metropolitan club.

The MCG arrangement was one of the clearest examples.

Richmond’s traditional home was Punt Road Oval, physically close to the MCG but commercially and strategically different from it. Punt Road was intimate, familiar and deeply connected to the club’s identity. But the MCG offered scale. It offered crowds, exposure and a sense that Richmond belonged on the biggest stage.

The move was not simply about geography.

It was about aspiration.

A club that played more regularly at the MCG was telling its members, opponents and players that it expected to matter in the league’s major theatre. Richmond was not abandoning Punt Road emotionally. It was using the MCG to expand what Richmond could become.

The administrative side of the club also became more deliberate. Richmond worked to improve its recruiting, its finances, its facilities and its organisational confidence. The club’s people understood that a premiership team could not be assembled only on match day. It had to be built through the way players trained, developed, recovered, were selected and were made to feel part of a larger standard.

The football department that produced 1967 was not yet a modern professional operation in the contemporary sense. Players still worked jobs. Training conditions were far removed from today’s AFL systems. Medical, analytical and conditioning resources were limited by modern standards.

But Richmond was moving ahead of the clubs that still treated football as something that could be solved by talent and tradition alone.

The Tigers were learning that the club behind the team mattered.

The MCG changed the imagination

Richmond’s association with the MCG was especially significant because of what the ground represented.

The MCG was the centre of Victorian football. It was where Grand Finals were played. It was where large crowds gathered. It was where the league’s biggest events became public history. To make the MCG part of Richmond’s regular football life was to reduce the psychological distance between an ordinary home-and-away match and a Grand Final.

Richmond’s players became more familiar with the space.

Its supporters became accustomed to seeing the yellow and black in front of large audiences.

The club’s administrators became more comfortable thinking at MCG scale.

That mattered in 1967. The Grand Final did not feel like an entirely foreign occasion. The size of the crowd and the weight of the match were extraordinary, but Richmond had already taken steps toward making the MCG part of its identity.

The effect was not magical.

Playing at the MCG did not kick goals. It did not stop Doug Wade marking. It did not replace Neville Crowe after his suspension. It did not remove the pressure of a Grand Final.

But culture is often built through repetition.

A club that expects to play on the biggest ground eventually begins to recruit, prepare and think like a club that belongs there.

Richmond’s 1967 premiership made that aspiration concrete.

The Tigers had not simply visited the MCG for the Grand Final.

They had helped make it their stage.

Hafey’s standards

Tom Hafey did not coach Richmond to the 1967 premiership by asking the Tigers to become the most elegant football side in the VFL.

He asked them to become the hardest-running, most committed and most connected version of themselves.

Hafey had played 67 senior games for Richmond before becoming a coach. He had coached the club’s reserves side to premierships in 1963 and 1964. He understood the club from inside. He knew its players, its supporters, its weaknesses and the value of a footballer who would work for the next contest.

When he became senior coach in 1966, Richmond was still searching for reliability. Hafey’s first season did not produce finals. The Tigers finished fifth. But the foundations were clear: the side was getting fitter, its style was becoming more direct, its younger players were being trusted and its football was beginning to reflect a clear collective demand.

Hafey’s Richmond wanted to move the ball forward.

It wanted tall targets.

It wanted runners around the contest.

It wanted repeat effort.

It wanted its players to keep presenting long after the opponent expected them to slow down.

The famous idea of the “final lap” became associated with Hafey’s football. The phrase captures something essential about his teams: the contest was not finished when the opposition gained momentum, took the lead or looked cleaner. Richmond’s players were trained to believe they could run harder and work longer when the match became most difficult.

The 1967 Grand Final showed that belief in practice.

Geelong took control of much of the third quarter. The Cats turned Richmond’s 16-point half-time lead into a 14-point lead of their own. They had Farmer’s ruckwork, Goggin’s pace, Sharrock’s skill and Wade’s marking. Richmond could have accepted that Geelong’s experience was decisive.

Instead, the Tigers kept creating scores.

Hart kicked a goal.

Brown kicked one.

Barrot drove forward and kicked another.

The late rushed behinds carried Richmond back into a two-point lead at three-quarter time.

Then Richmond won the last quarter.

Hafey’s influence was not a single tactical command. It was the existence of a side physically and emotionally ready to keep responding.

Fitness was a competitive advantage

In 1967, fitness was not a decorative part of Richmond’s identity.

It was an advantage.

The Tigers trained hard. They ran. They repeated drills. They prepared for a style of football that asked players to cover ground, chase, recover and make the next contest. Hafey’s sessions were demanding because the game plan demanded them to be.

Richmond’s direct style could look simple from a distance.

Win the ball.

Kick it long.

Make the forward contest dangerous.

Bring runners to the fall of the ball.

But simplicity can be physically expensive.

A long kick forward is useless if the forwards do not lead. A contest is lost if the smaller players do not arrive. A half-back rebound fails if the wingmen do not spread. A centre break becomes a turnover if there is no second or third option. Direct football requires trust that teammates will keep running into the space the ball is about to enter.

Richmond had that trust more often than it had in earlier years.

The 1967 side had players who could cover ground. Kevin Bartlett, only 20, had the stamina and instinct to arrive at ground-ball contests. Francis Bourke could play a variety of roles and carry himself into the game. Mike Green and Barry Richardson gave the side movement and courage. Bill Barrot was capable of driving the ball long from the centre. Royce Hart could lead and mark over a wide area rather than waiting close to goal.

The system depended on every part being willing to run.

This is why the 1967 premiership cannot be reduced to individual brilliance. Hart’s marks were spectacular. Bartlett’s final-quarter snap was famous. Ronaldson’s two long goals were extraordinary. Swift’s mark on the line was iconic.

But none of those moments existed outside a system that had made Richmond physically capable of producing one more effort.

The football beneath the seniors

One of Richmond’s most important achievements before 1967 was the development of a stronger football pathway.

Hafey’s reserves premierships in 1963 and 1964 were not just trophies. They were signs that the club could coach, organise and develop players beneath the senior level. A reserves side that learns how to win, train and play for each other can become a source of senior footballers who understand the club’s methods before they are asked to perform in the firsts.

That mattered when Richmond needed depth.

The 1967 Grand Final is the clearest example.

Neville Crowe, Richmond’s captain early in the season and a vital ruckman, was suspended after the preliminary final. His absence was potentially devastating. Crowe had provided height, leadership and a major contesting presence. Geelong had Graham Farmer, one of the greatest ruckmen the game had seen. Richmond was about to face the Cats without one of its central big men.

John Ronaldson came in.

Ronaldson had played only six senior games in 1967. He had spent much of the year in the reserves. He had not been a permanent senior figure. Yet when Richmond needed him, he understood enough of the club’s football to compete in the ruck, work forward and become a decisive figure in the last quarter.

He tapped the ball to Bartlett for the Tigers’ first final-quarter goal.

He marked near the boundary and kicked a long, unexpected goal to level the scores.

He won another free kick near the boundary and kicked another long goal to put Richmond ahead.

A club cannot plan for every individual moment. It cannot plan for a player to kick two improbable Grand Final goals.

But it can build an environment in which a recalled player is ready to contribute rather than merely survive.

That is what Richmond had done.

The reserves were not separate from the premiership story.

They were part of it.

The players who gave the rebuild a face

A rebuild needs structures, but supporters experience it through people.

The 1967 Richmond team gave the club a group of players who could carry the meaning of the premiership into the future.

Some had endured the lean years.

Some were only beginning.

Together, they made the flag feel like the start of something larger.

Fred Swift was the bridge to the past. He had joined Richmond in 1958, played through the 1960 wooden spoon and became captain in 1967. His shift to full-back late in the season and his task against Wade gave him a central role in the Grand Final. His late mark near the goal line became a symbol of survival and leadership. Swift did not captain the later Richmond premierships, but his 1967 captaincy mattered because he represented the players who had stayed loyal through the years when success looked distant.

Roger Dean was another survivor. He had debuted in 1957 and experienced the long period without finals. His defensive work in the Grand Final was less celebrated than the goals and high marks, but he was part of the group that gave Richmond resilience. Dean later captained the 1969 premiership side, creating a direct link between the 1967 breakthrough and the next flag.

Royce Hart represented the future arriving early. At 19, he was already a magnificent forward. His marking ability, mobility and willingness to attack the ball gave Richmond an offensive weapon that opponents could not comfortably match with a single defender. His mark over Peter Walker in the final quarter became one of the enduring images of the day. Hart would become captain for the 1973 and 1974 premierships, making him perhaps the clearest playing symbol of the dynasty’s continuity.

Kevin Bartlett was only 20, but he was already essential. His first final-quarter goal came from Ronaldson’s tap. His later snap created the margin Richmond needed. Bartlett’s influence was not based on height or brute force. It came from anticipation, endurance and an ability to find the loose ball before the opponent understood where it was going. He would become the most enduring player of the Hafey era, a six-time Richmond premiership player and a figure who connected 1967 to every later success.

Francis Bourke was another player whose importance would grow. He played in 1967 and became one of the great team men of Richmond’s golden era. His versatility, courage and reliability made him central to the later flags. In 1967, he was part of the young group learning what a premiership standard looked like. In 1969, 1973 and 1974, he was one of the players who carried that standard forward.

Mike Green, Barry Richardson, Paddy Guinane, Billy Brown, Mike Patterson, Dick Clay, John Perry, Bill Barrot and others each had roles in the 1967 success. Some would remain central to later flags. Some would move on. Some would be remembered most strongly for one Grand Final act.

The important point is that Richmond did not win with a group that had reached the end of its life cycle.

It won with a side that still had room to grow.

Barrot and the danger of hindsight

Bill Barrot’s role complicates any simple story that 1967 naturally flowed into the later dynasty.

He was Richmond’s best player in the 1967 Grand Final. His 27 possessions and seven marks came with an influence that was greater than statistics alone. He repeatedly drove the ball forward. He won contests. He kicked an important third-quarter goal when Geelong looked capable of taking the match away. His football gave Richmond a way to move the ball when the Cats’ skill and experience threatened to control it.

Yet Barrot’s Richmond career did not become a straightforward dynasty narrative.

He played a smaller role in 1968, then left for Carlton in 1969. Richmond won the 1969 premiership without him.

That fact is not an embarrassment in the 1967 story.

It is a lesson.

The club’s future could not rely on one Grand Final performance, no matter how brilliant. Richmond had to become a team whose strength survived change. It had to replace players, redefine roles and maintain standards even when people left or declined.

The later dynasty was not simply 1967 repeated.

It was Richmond learning how to keep winning after the original premiership team changed.

Barrot’s departure showed that the 1967 flag had created a platform, not a permanent lineup.

The forward line as an early model

Richmond’s forward line in 1967 also pointed toward the football that would make the club dangerous in the years to come.

Hart was the most gifted aerial player. His movement meant he could lead up the ground, take marks in difficult positions and force defenders to make choices. If an opponent followed him, space opened behind. If an opponent stayed back, Hart could receive the ball and turn.

Guinane brought height and contesting power. He gave Richmond another aerial option and made it harder for Geelong to focus entirely on Hart.

Ronaldson could compete as a ruck-forward. His Grand Final goals made him famous, but his structural importance was just as significant. He gave Richmond a tall option who could contest boundary throw-ins, provide taps and create a different kind of forward target.

Brown and Bartlett gave the side ground-level intelligence. They were not simply waiting for the tall men to mark. They expected the ball to spill. They attacked the crumb. They pressured defenders. They could kick goals from opportunities that did not look like opportunities until they arrived.

This mixture was difficult to isolate.

A defence could not simply place its best full-back on Hart and expect the job to be done. It had to deal with multiple tall contests and multiple small forwards. It had to defend long kicks, ball spills, boundary throw-ins and sudden forward pressure.

That forward-line logic became a central part of Richmond’s identity under Hafey.

The Tigers wanted the ball in attack quickly.

They wanted contests.

They wanted numbers at the fall.

They wanted opponents to keep defending until the ball was safely out of danger.

The 1967 Grand Final showed how effective that could be. Geelong had excellent players and a gifted ruckman. Yet Richmond’s forward group found enough ways to score: Hart kicked three goals, Brown kicked three, Bartlett kicked two and Ronaldson kicked two.

The Tigers did not need one player to dominate every minute.

They needed the forward line to keep producing another threat.

The importance of the old guard

The 1967 flag also mattered because it gave recognition to players who had endured the difficult years.

Grand Finals are often remembered through the youngest stars because their futures seem visible. Hart and Bartlett represented what Richmond could become. But the emotional significance of 1967 belonged just as strongly to the players who had lived through the club’s failures.

Swift was the most obvious example.

Dean was another.

Mike Patterson, Barry Richardson and other senior players had experienced a Richmond that was not a September regular. They had watched the club rebuild. They had trained through seasons that produced little public reward. They had carried the expectation of supporters who remembered Dyer and wanted another era of strength.

Their premiership was not a sentimental extra.

It was a necessary part of the club’s renewal.

A rebuild can become cruel if it relies entirely on replacing the old group with a new one. Richmond’s 1967 success was richer because it included men who had stayed through the drought and were still capable of contributing when the breakthrough came.

The flag did not erase the lean years.

It gave them an ending.

The Grand Final as proof of method

Richmond’s win over Geelong was not a comfortable demonstration of superiority.

That is exactly why it was such valuable proof.

The Tigers led by 16 points at half-time. Geelong then produced a six-goal third quarter, turning the deficit into a 14-point advantage at one stage. The Cats had more finals experience. Farmer’s ruckwork and field awareness were extraordinary. Goggin ran. Sharrock created. Wade scored. Richmond was forced to confront an opponent playing high-quality football under Grand Final pressure.

The Tigers did not avoid adversity.

They endured it.

At three-quarter time, Richmond led by only two points. The last quarter was a sequence of instability. Bartlett gave Richmond an early eight-point advantage. Geelong fought back and took the lead. Ronaldson’s first long boundary goal levelled the scores. Hart rose over Walker. Ronaldson kicked another long goal. Bartlett found space and snapped Richmond’s sixteenth. Swift preserved the defence near the goal line. The siren came with Richmond nine points ahead.

The final score was 16.18 (114) to 15.15 (105).

The match taught Richmond more than a comfortable Grand Final victory could have taught it.

It taught the Tigers that their style could survive momentum swings.

It taught the young players that September pressure did not make them helpless.

It taught Hafey that the group could respond when a match seemed to turn against it.

It taught the supporters that the club did not merely belong in finals. It could win the biggest game.

That knowledge is one of the most valuable things a first premiership gives a club.

The first flag becomes a reference point.

Every later player hears about it.

Every later team measures itself against it.

Every later crisis is understood through the fact that Richmond had once been under pressure against Geelong at the MCG and had still found a way to win.

Why 1968 matters so much

If the story ended with the 1967 Grand Final, it would be easy to say that Richmond had become a dynasty overnight.

1968 prevents that simplification.

The Tigers won 14 home-and-away matches in 1968.

They missed the finals.

Under the VFL’s top-four system, winning 14 games was not enough. Richmond finished fifth. The club had been good, sometimes very good, but it did not earn another September campaign.

The near miss was harsh. It was also revealing.

Richmond had gone from premiership winner to outsider in one season, not because the 1967 flag had been meaningless, but because the VFL was unforgiving. A strong year did not guarantee finals. The competition was crowded with capable sides. A few losses, percentage, inconsistency or the wrong results at the wrong time could end a season.

For Richmond, 1968 was a warning against entitlement.

The Tigers had learned how to win a Grand Final.

They had not learned how to make success automatic.

This is where the distinction between a breakthrough and a dynasty becomes essential.

A breakthrough is a season in which a team proves it can reach the summit.

A dynasty is an era in which a club repeatedly rebuilds the path to the summit after every interruption.

Richmond’s 1967 flag was unquestionably a breakthrough.

The 1968 disappointment showed that the dynasty still had to be built.

Missing finals with fourteen wins

The old VFL ladder created a particular kind of pressure.

Only four teams made the finals. There was no top eight, no second chance for fifth or sixth, no broad finals series in which a strong home-and-away record could still earn a place. To finish fifth was to be finished, regardless of how many wins had been accumulated.

Richmond’s 14 wins in 1968 therefore carried a strange legacy.

They proved the Tigers remained a strong football side.

They also proved that strength without sufficient week-to-week precision could leave a club outside September.

For a team coming off a premiership, that is a brutal lesson.

It required Richmond to ask difficult questions.

Had the players relaxed?

Had opponents adjusted to the Tigers’ direct style?

Had the club assumed that the intensity of 1967 would simply return because the same players were still present?

Had injuries, form loss, selection and the natural fluctuations of football exposed weaknesses that the premiership glow had hidden?

The precise answers can be debated. The broader conclusion is clear.

Richmond could not live on the emotional capital of 1967.

The club had to renew its standards.

The missing finals campaign made the eventual 1969 premiership more meaningful because it was not merely the next step in a smooth rise. It was a recovery. Richmond had to confront the fact that a flag can create expectation without guaranteeing performance.

The Tigers responded by becoming more demanding.

Success changes the opponent

Another reason 1967 did not automatically become a dynasty is that premiership teams stop being surprises.

Before 1967, Richmond had been a club trying to break through. Opponents could respect the Tigers without necessarily designing their entire preparation around them.

After 1967, every opponent knew what Richmond could do.

They knew the Tigers wanted to move the ball directly.

They knew Hart was dangerous in the air.

They knew Bartlett would appear at ground level.

They knew the side had fitness and running capacity.

They knew Hafey’s teams would keep attacking.

Success changes the way other clubs see a team. It changes matchups. It changes tactics. It changes the emotional stakes of every game. Teams want to beat the reigning premier. A victory over the premiership side becomes proof of their own ambition.

Richmond had to learn to play with that target on its back.

That is not easy for a young group.

The 1967 side had entered the finals without any senior player carrying the burden of prior VFL finals failure. The Tigers were inexperienced, but they were also free from the pressure of defending a premiership.

In 1968, the freedom was gone.

Richmond was expected to win.

The club’s eventual capacity to meet that expectation in 1969, 1973 and 1974 is what turns the period into a dynasty. But that capacity was not born fully formed in 1967.

It had to be developed through disappointment.

1969: proof that 1967 was not a one-off

The 1969 premiership is the season that confirms the lasting significance of 1967.

If Richmond had won in 1967 and then faded, the flag would still be cherished. It would have ended the drought. It would have given Swift, Dean, Hart, Bartlett and their teammates a place in club history. It would have been a glorious exception.

But Richmond won again in 1969.

That second flag altered the meaning of the first.

It showed that the Tigers had not simply caught the league at the right moment. It showed that Hafey’s methods could produce another campaign. It showed that Richmond could recover from missing the finals in 1968. It showed that the club had acquired a standard stronger than one premiership team.

The 1969 Grand Final victory over Carlton was therefore not a separate story from 1967.

It was the first confirmation that 1967 had built something durable.

There were changes.

Dean was captain.

The team had evolved.

Barrot was no longer at Richmond.

The 1969 side had to solve different problems and face different opponents.

But the core remained recognisable.

Hafey was still coach.

Hart was still a central forward.

Bartlett was still a crucial small player.

Bourke, Clay, Green and others continued to provide strength, flexibility and character.

The club’s expectation had changed.

Richmond was no longer hoping to return to relevance.

It expected to compete for premierships.

That expectation is one of the clearest legacies of 1967.

The gap after 1969

The period between the 1969 premiership and the next Richmond flag in 1973 is also important.

A dynasty is often described as a continuous run, as though a club wins every season or remains visibly dominant without interruption. Richmond’s Hafey era was not like that. The Tigers did not win every year. They faced defeats, list change, competition from strong opponents and the normal instability of football.

The 1970 Grand Final loss to Carlton was a particularly painful example. Richmond had another chance at a flag and did not take it. The match remained a reminder that even the strongest clubs can be exposed when a Grand Final moves against them.

The loss mattered because it prevented Richmond from treating success as an entitlement.

The Tigers had now experienced both sides of the Grand Final stage under Hafey. They had won in 1967. They had won in 1969. They had lost in 1970.

That combination created a more mature premiership culture.

By 1973 and 1974, Richmond was no longer simply a young club discovering that it could win. It was a club that understood the cost of failing to take its chances. The players had learned that standards had to be renewed, that the competition would not stand still and that the Grand Final was never guaranteed by reputation.

The 1967 breakthrough had created belief.

The years that followed taught Richmond discipline.

Hart’s captaincy and the mature dynasty

Royce Hart’s captaincy in the 1973 and 1974 premierships gives the era a powerful sense of continuity.

In 1967, Hart was the brilliant 19-year-old forward whose leap over Peter Walker became one of the day’s defining images. He represented youthful ability, fearless contesting and the possibility of a new Richmond.

By 1973, he was captain.

The boy who had helped announce Richmond’s arrival became the leader of a side that expected to win.

That evolution captures the journey from rebuild to dynasty.

In 1967, Richmond had needed players to prove they belonged on the biggest stage.

In 1973 and 1974, Richmond had players who embodied what belonging on that stage required.

Hart’s leadership was not merely symbolic. A captain represents the values a club wants to preserve. Richmond’s later premiership teams still carried the aggressive, direct and physically demanding character associated with Hafey. They still relied on collective work. They still had the capacity to create pressure through running and forward movement.

But the players were more experienced.

They had been through flags, losses, selection changes and the repeated demands of being a leading side.

The 1973 and 1974 premierships therefore should not be seen as inevitable consequences of 1967.

They were the mature expression of the culture first proven in 1967.

Bartlett as the connecting figure

No player connects the Richmond premierships of 1967, 1969, 1973 and 1974 more clearly than Kevin Bartlett.

In 1967, he was 20.

He kicked the Tigers’ first goal of the final quarter from Ronaldson’s tap. Later, he backed away from the congestion, gathered the loose ball and snapped the sixteenth goal that gave Richmond decisive breathing room. He was young enough to be described as a future star, but important enough to affect the result immediately.

In 1969, he was a premiership player again.

In 1973 and 1974, he remained part of Richmond’s winning core.

Bartlett’s career matters because it demonstrates the difference between a team and a culture. Individual teams change. Players retire, leave, lose form or move roles. The 1967 Grand Final side did not remain intact. But a player like Bartlett carried the memory of how Richmond had won.

He knew what a Grand Final felt like.

He knew what Hafey demanded.

He knew how Richmond’s forward play worked.

He knew that the ball could be found outside a pack if a player was disciplined enough to anticipate.

Before 1967, Richmond’s past was heavy. The club had the 1943 flag, Dyer’s legend and the memory of what it had once been. But the future was uncertain.

After 1967, the future became something Richmond could imagine.

Then something it could build.

What 1967 could not give

The premiership could not give Richmond immunity from decline.

It could not guarantee finals in 1968.

It could not keep every player at the club.

It could not prevent injuries, form slumps or tactical responses from opponents.

It could not ensure that the hunger of a drought-breaking team would automatically survive once the drought had ended.

It could not make the next Grand Final easier.

These limitations are not reasons to diminish 1967.

They are reasons to understand it properly.

A first premiership is powerful because it changes the possibilities available to a club. But it does not eliminate the need for work. In some ways, it makes the work harder. Expectations rise.
