Before the 2017 Flag, Something Had Already Returned to Richmond
Grand Final week in 2017 did something to Richmond before Richmond had won anything.
Michael Roach could recognise it because he had lived through the suburb’s last great football pulse. He knew what Richmond felt like around the 1980 Grand Final, and he also knew what came after: the collapse, the survival fight and the decades without another appearance on the last Saturday.
By 2017 Roach was more than a former player revisiting old ground. Richmond had become part of his family geography — work, home, schools, streets and routines as well as football.
Then the local team finally came back to the Grand Final and the place around it changed.
What had returned to Richmond the suburb before the premiership itself had even returned to Richmond the football club?
That is the part of Grand Final week the scorebook cannot preserve.
