Premiership cups now live behind glass, move under club control and appear in public through organised events. Richmond’s 1967 cup once entered Melbourne by a very different route.
On the Labour Day holiday in 1968, a young supporter wanted the newly won cup in the Moomba procession. What followed involved Punt Road keys, an empty clubroom and a brown paper bag.
The detail is funny because it feels impossible now. It is also valuable because it exposes a supporter-club relationship from another era — one in which access, trust and informality sat much closer together than they do today.
