Why Does Dustin Martin Still Matter to Richmond’s Next Generation?

The RTSSG member feature Young Tigers won’t listen to their parents… but they’ll listen to Dusty 🐯 opens a question that is still worth carrying into the next Richmond conversation.

What can the old era actually give the new one?

Before Richmond broke through for its first win of 2026, Dustin Martin spent time with the young group. The message reportedly included a reminder that the early Hardwick years were difficult too, and that Martin’s own Richmond career began long before the premierships, medals and mythology.

That raises a question bigger than nostalgia. What does a young player hear differently when the lesson comes from someone who lived the entire climb? Can a champion transfer patience, standards or belief in a way a coach cannot? Or does the next Richmond have to discover its own language rather than borrow authority from the last one?

How should Richmond use premiership figures around a rebuild? As symbols? Mentors? Cultural witnesses? What is genuinely useful to a teenager trying to survive his first AFL season, and what belongs only to the story supporters tell about the past?

There will not be another Dustin Martin. That may be exactly why his role around the next generation is worth asking about.
