What Would a Dustin Martin Comeback Actually Ask of Richmond’s 2027 Rebuild?

But is “could he still play?” even the right question for Richmond?
If Dustin Martin could still contribute as a forward or mid-forward, what would Richmond actually be buying? Would the value be measured in goals, moments, leadership, forward craft or something else? And if he took a place in the best 23, whose opportunity would move?
What happens when the rebuild is added to the equation? Richmond needs young players to receive AFL exposure, but young players also develop around experienced footballers. Where is the point at which one helps the other, and where might the balance begin to change?
Would a short-term veteran role make the young forward line easier to develop, or would it postpone decisions Richmond eventually has to make? What would a full preseason need to prove before sentiment could even enter the conversation? And if selection were based only on the best 23, how should Richmond judge the opportunity cost of one more season?
The interesting question is therefore not whether supporters would enjoy seeing Dustin Martin in yellow and black again. It is what Richmond would need such a comeback to accomplish — and what else would have to move to make room for it.
