Richmond Had Three Rising Star Nominees. Why Did None Poll a Vote?
Richmond did not have a barren young-player season. Sam Grlj, Patrick Retschko and Jasper Alger each produced a performance strong enough to earn a Rising Star nomination.
Then the final voting produced a very different picture. Carlton had winner Jagga Smith and runner-up Harry Dean. Richmond’s three nominees did not poll a vote.
The award is not a rebuild ladder and it cannot account neatly for role, injury or opportunity. But it is an external measure Richmond does not control, which makes the comparison harder to dismiss.
A nomination can prove a young player is capable of an AFL-level moment. The final voting raises a different issue about repeatability, influence and the distance between flashing and imposing yourself across a season.
Does the 2026 result expose a meaningful development gap for Richmond — or simply a group of young Tigers travelling on different clocks?
