Who Were Richmond’s Tigerettes — and Why Did They Last Only One Season?

Richmond’s 1980 season included a curious piece of Tigerland history: the Tigerettes. Contemporary material described a group of 12 young women, with an average age of 19, rehearsing a specially designed routine after Richmond explored its own answer to Carlton’s Bluebirds.
The experiment did not become a long Richmond tradition. The Tigerettes were gone by the end of 1980.
Why did Richmond try it in the first place? What did it say about the way VFL clubs were beginning to package match day as entertainment as well as football? Why did something launched with publicity and internal interest disappear so quickly? And how should we read the Tigerettes now: as a quirky footnote, a snapshot of 1980 football culture, or something that tells us more about how clubs were changing around the game?
