What was Richmond testing with Tom Brown?
Tom Brown was pushed forward against Geelong. He did not look completely comfortable there, but one night is not enough to decide whether the experiment was wrong.
So what was Richmond actually testing? Was the move about Brown’s future, a short-term need, the players around him, or simply seeing whether another part of his game could become useful?
If his kicking and composure remain attractive behind the ball, what would have to be true for Richmond to prefer him elsewhere? If the club does see a forward role, which job is he being developed to perform and who is he competing with for it?
When does versatility become a strength for a young footballer, and when can it make his best position harder to identify? What would role clarity change about Brown’s summer, his craft work and the way Richmond judges his mistakes?
Does Richmond need one fixed answer before 2027 begins, or simply a much clearer primary role and a reason for every move away from it?
The Geelong experiment did not settle where Brown belongs. It made the question harder to ignore.
