What Happened to Richmond’s 1994 Rising Star Generation?

RTSSG’s full member feature 1994 AFL Rising Star: Where are these Tigers now? looks back at a Richmond group whose early promise was being measured three decades ago — and asks what became of the players behind those first impressions.

Jamie Tape, Matthew Rogers and Duncan Kellaway all appeared in Richmond’s 1994 Rising Star story, but what does looking back at them now actually tell us about how quickly a young player’s future can diverge from the expectation attached to him?

Is a Rising Star season evidence of what a player will become, or only evidence of what he had already shown by that moment? How much do role, injury, opportunity, team quality and simple timing change the career that follows?

And what happens when we compare the way Richmond supporters remember those players with the way they were being discussed when they first emerged? Does hindsight make development look more predictable than it ever really was?

Tape’s story carries a very different weight from the others. How should Richmond remember a young player whose football career became only one part of a life cut tragically short? What belongs in the football record, and what sits beyond it?

Rogers and Kellaway offer different questions again. What does longevity look like when viewed from the beginning rather than the end? Which parts of a player’s eventual Richmond identity could supporters genuinely have seen in 1994, and which only became obvious years later?

There is also a broader Richmond question underneath the individual careers: when a club is rebuilding around another wave of young players, what should history teach us about the danger of treating early promise as a finished forecast?

The archive gives us the names and the early excitement. The harder question is what happened between prospect and career — and what Richmond can really know about a young player before that journey is complete.
