What Does Maurice Rioli Jr’s Speed Actually Give Richmond?
Updated: Aug 26
Maurice Rioli Jr was recorded at 35.9 km/h in 2025, placing him among the AFL’s fastest players.
That number sounds spectacular. But speed by itself does not tell us whether Richmond is getting maximum value from it.
Where does Rioli’s pace actually change a possession? Is its greatest value in attack, chase-down pressure, closing space, forcing rushed disposal, or simply making opponents alter what they think they can get away with?
And if Richmond owns one of the competition’s genuine speed weapons, what should the team structure around him be designed to create? The number is only the beginning of the question.
