Was Richmond’s 2024 Injury Crisis Really Just Bad Luck?

The full RTSSG member feature, Richmond has investigated the reasons behind the injury carnage which has derailed its start under new coach Adem Yze., is the starting point for this Public investigation.

By late April 2024 Richmond’s injury list had already included Jacob Hopper, Noah Balta and a string of other important players, while Judson Clarke had suffered an ACL injury in the VFL. The club said it had investigated the run and believed bad luck rather than poor management was the primary cause.

How do supporters test a statement like that fairly? Which injuries were collision or chance events, and which might tell us something about preparation, recurrence or load? How large does a sample need to become before “bad luck” stops being a sufficient explanation?

And if the club’s diagnosis was correct, what should have happened next as players returned and the season continued?

The member feature follows the evidence further and resolves the question. Read the full RTSSG investigation here.
