Rebuild stories are usually told as replacement stories: the old order fails, a new group arrives, and the club begins again. Richmond’s road from the long post-1943 drought to the 1967 premiership was not quite that clean.
Fred Swift and Roger Dean had known Richmond before the breakthrough. They had played through years in which finals football seemed distant, then remained important when the club around them began to change.
What did those survivors carry from the old Richmond into the new one? Were they simply good players who lasted long enough, or did continuity itself become part of the transformation?
