Richmond can decide to play faster in 2027 and still make the game harder for itself. The more interesting question is whether the Tigers are creating enough usable space before the ball carrier is asked to move it.

Richmond’s 2026 numbers — 18th for disposals and metres gained, 17th for marks and inside 50s, with a major uncontested-possession deficit — do not prove width was the problem. They do, however, make one question worth following: when Richmond gained possession, how often was it trying to attack through a ground it had already helped compress?

If the wing, half-forward and opposite-side players are all drawn toward the same contest, speed alone will not solve the next possession. In 2027, who is responsible for making the ground bigger before Richmond tries to use it?
