Richmond Won the Hit-Outs and Clearances Against Walyalup. So Why Did the Ball Still Live at the Other End?
Richmond’s loss to Walyalup produced one of those stat lines that looks as though it should explain the game — until it doesn’t. The Tigers finished ahead in hit-outs and clearances, numbers that normally suggest a side is at least getting enough first possession to give itself a chance.
That matters even more when a developing Richmond midfield is being asked to cope without Monique Conti and Ellie McKenzie. There was genuine evidence of young Tigers competing at the source. Yet the scoreboard and the shape of the match kept telling a very different story.
That leaves the uncomfortable puzzle: if Richmond could get first hands on the ball often enough, why did the game still spend so much time heading the other way? What was happening after the first win that the headline statistics cannot show?
