Richmond Has a New High Performance Manager. What Must Selwyn Griffith Make Possible in 2027?
Updated: Sep 2
Richmond has appointed Selwyn Griffith as its new High Performance Manager after a season in which availability and interrupted development repeatedly shaped what the football program could even test. But a shorter injury list by itself would be too simple a way to judge what comes next.
The harder 2027 question is what Richmond needs its high-performance program to make possible. Can the young list train with enough continuity, absorb enough work and stay available for long enough that coaches can build roles, combinations and repeatable football instead of constantly restarting them? And where should Griffith’s responsibility end when injuries, list construction, selection and the game model all collide?
That creates a different standard from simply counting how many players appear on the medical report. Supporters should be able to ask what physical continuity looks like in the preseason, whether young players are getting uninterrupted development blocks, whether the team can sustain the work its game plan demands and whether Richmond is finally creating conditions in which the rebuild can be judged cleanly.
The member feature examines Griffith’s background, the problem he inherits and the evidence Richmond should be looking for in 2027 before it can say the high-performance side of the rebuild is giving the football program what it needs.
