John Perry did not arrive at Punt Road as an outsider. Richmond already ran through his family before he pulled on the jumper, and by 1967 he had a premiership medal of his own.
Read backwards, that can make the career look almost inevitable. It was anything but. Perry was close enough to the centre of one of Richmond’s greatest eras to share in its breakthrough, yet his place in the side never became as secure as the family pedigree might suggest.
How can a footballer be that close to Richmond history and still spend so much of his career fighting simply to stay in the frame?
