Jack Dyer did not describe Carlton as an ordinary opponent. In his own reflections, Richmond seemed to find something against the Blues that repeatedly changed the contest.
The rivalry is easy to retell through spite, finals and famous names. Dyer’s version is more interesting because he believed there was football underneath it — a reason Richmond could trouble a powerful Carlton side even when the same Tigers could be undone by somebody else.
