Jack Dyer is remembered so completely as Captain Blood that the coach can disappear inside the legend.
The collisions, sayings and toughness are easy to preserve. His own reflections on more than a decade coaching Richmond are harder to reduce to a slogan. Dyer remembered decisions he believed he got wrong, players he misread and moments when simply demanding more aggression was not the answer.
That makes his coaching story more interesting than asking whether a man from the 1940s could understand modern football. He obviously worked in another football world. The useful comparison sits somewhere else.
