Jack Dyer Called Jack Broadstock the Most Talented Footballer He Ever Saw. Why Did He Play Only 33 Games for Richmond?
Jack Broadstock’s Richmond numbers do not look like the beginning of a legend: 33 games between 1943 and 1946.
Then you look at what happened inside them. He arrived from South Australia, played in Richmond’s 1943 premiership in just his sixth VFL game and later received an assessment from Jack Dyer that almost demands a second reading. Dyer called Broadstock the most talented footballer he had seen.
This was not faint praise from a man short of champion teammates and opponents. Dyer remembered first seeing Broadstock as a teenager and watching him make some of Victorian football’s great names look ordinary. Richmond eventually got him to Punt Road — but only briefly.
How does a footballer rated that highly, and already a premiership player after six games, finish with only 33 appearances for Richmond?
