Jack Dyer grew up in Yarra Junction, left school young and wanted to play League football for Richmond. Yet the path from that ambition to becoming Captain Blood was anything but automatic. As a teenager he applied for a clearance to Collingwood before Richmond had fully committed to him.
What did Richmond see when Dyer finally trained at Punt Road? Why did coach Checker Hughes pit the youngster against an established veteran in a practice session? Was the test really about skill, or about something Richmond wanted to know before trusting him with senior football?
Dyer’s early story also belongs to another Melbourne: Depression-era match payments, unused reserves receiving less money and a club making decisions in conditions almost impossible to imagine now. How much did that environment shape the player — and the Richmond identity — that followed?
