Did Richmond Trade Away Too Much — or Buy the Right Kind of Future?

The full RTSSG member feature Neil Balme has his say on Richmond’s bold trade and draft strategy starts with a question that is still worth asking.

Richmond moved on premiership players and loaded up on draft capital. Neil Balme backed the strategy. But what exactly did that trade-off ask the club to get right next?

Shai Bolton, Daniel Rioli, Liam Baker and Jack Graham left while Richmond accumulated premium draft picks. The transaction was obvious. The harder question was what success would eventually look like. Was the value in the picks themselves, the players selected with them, the timing of the rebuild, or how quickly the club could turn youth into a functioning side? What would make the strategy look brave rather than merely expensive?

The point of the Public doorway is not to settle those questions here. It is to identify the evidence, the disturbance and the next question — then leave the synthesis where it belongs: in the full member feature.
