The full RTSSG member feature, Why free agency won’t rescue the Tigers ByJake Niall, opens the deeper investigation behind this Public doorway.

Free agency gives clubs access to experienced AFL talent without surrendering a conventional trade return. For a rebuilding Richmond, that naturally creates the temptation to look for acceleration.

But what can a free agent actually solve? Can one elite player change age profile, leadership, midfield quality or forward connection? What happens if the rest of the list is not yet ready to support that player?

When does paying for certainty make sense, and when does it simply move resources away from the longer build? How does Richmond separate the player it wants from the problem it needs solved?

Is free agency a shortcut, a complement to the draft, or a test of whether Richmond correctly understands where its rebuild actually sits?

The Public question stops here. Read the full RTSSG member feature.
