Adem Yze: Can Richmond Keep Its Commands Simple When Fatigue Makes Football Complicated?

Richmond might understand Adem Yze's system perfectly at the start of a match and still abandon it at the point where the system matters most. Fatigue does more than slow a player's legs. It narrows his attention, makes communication harder and encourages the instinct to chase whichever danger is easiest to see. That is a serious issue for one of the AFL's younger sides. The coaching problem for 2027 is whether Yze can give his footballers instructions simple enough to survive exhaustion without turning them into slogans that mean almost nothing when an opponent changes the picture.

An elaborate game plan can look convincing in the meeting room because every situation has its own explanation. The problem is the player who has already sprinted twice, lost the contest and must decide where to run in the next two seconds. He cannot reopen a slide presentation to remember the exception to the rule. In the full RTSSG Members investigation, we examine what fatigue takes away from a footballer's decisions and how many commands a tired team can realistically carry. We ask which shared priorities should remain automatic even when the players can no longer process the whole situation at once.

How much football instruction survives when the players are exhausted?

Simplifying instructions is not the same as making them vague. 'Work harder' can describe the intensity Richmond wants while telling the footballer nothing about the space he must protect. 'Stay connected' can become equally empty if the players disagree about whom or what they are supposed to connect with. In the full feature, we dissect how Richmond can distinguish a concise coaching cue from a meaningless one and what must survive when the legs do not. We examine which words should trigger a recognisable next action rather than another moment of uncertainty.

There will be passages when Yze cannot communicate with the player who must make the decision. The ball may stay in play through several contests, while the opposition changes its angle of attack and Richmond's defenders are already under pressure. A usable rule must work without the senior coach being able to repeat it. In our Members investigation, we look at how Yze should teach a command that functions without his voice and how practice can create the right sort of tiredness. We ask whether repeated decision-making under fatigue can become something more useful than simply running until players are exhausted.

Can a simple command be precise without being restrictive?

Selection should reward the footballer who continues recognising the correct responsibility late in a quarter, not only the player who covers the most distance. That may favour teammates whose awareness holds up even when their physical output drops. Ratten's involvement in the defensive system also provides an opportunity to remove conflicting instruction across lines. In the full feature, we examine what the fatigue test changes about selection and how Brett Ratten can make the coaching system simpler rather than louder. The real challenge is to make three different lines respond to the same problem without needing three separate explanations.

A good rule cannot become a permanent excuse for failing to adapt. An opposition side may repeatedly attack the space Richmond was not expecting, or a game-state change may make the original risk unreasonable. The players need to know when a simple command still applies and when the coach or on-field leaders must change it. In the full Members investigation, we dissect when a command should change and what failure can look like even when every Tiger is giving honest effort. We examine how the club can separate exhausted execution from an instruction that no longer fits.

What happens when the rule no longer fits the game?

Yze has said Richmond must be judged by actions when the players are challenged, tired and unwatched. That leaves little value in a system that functions only while the bench is fresh and the instructions are newly delivered. The Tigers need a language that gets shorter as football becomes harder, without becoming less exact. In the complete Members investigation, we examine the early evidence of progress and what 2027 will demand from Yze's teaching. The test is whether Richmond can still make connected decisions when there is no energy left for another explanation.
