When Richmond named its Round 1 side, Tom Brown, Luke Trainor and Tyler Sonsie were among the names sitting outside the selected 23 and the reaction was immediate.
The interesting question was not whether each player had supporters who wanted him picked. It was what Richmond’s coaches were valuing when several recognisable young names were competing for specific roles rather than simply competing on talent.
How much should pre-season form matter? What happens when two players appear to offer similar strengths but only one role exists? Can a young player be part of the future and still be correctly left out of the present team?
