Richmond Remembered the Wrong Johnston for 110 Years. How Did the Error Survive?

Richmond’s first VFL season contains a small historical problem with a very long life.

For more than a century, the record said Alex Johnston played two games for Richmond in 1908. The story was tidy enough to survive because it appeared to fit the names, dates and movement patterns already attached to him.

Then the evidence stopped fitting. A permit notice, another club’s team list and Richmond’s own annual report created a contradiction that could not be solved by repeating the accepted record.

How can one Richmond footballer disappear from the club’s history while another man is remembered in his place for 110 years?
