Richmond’s 2026 football department divided responsibility across stoppage, ball movement, forwards, defence and development. Late in the season the Tigers won the clearance count in four consecutive matches, yet over that period they still ranked 16th for points generated from stoppage. Both pieces of evidence can be true at once.

So what should happen after one part of the football improves? If Richmond wins the clearance, who owns the transition from that win to a useful possession? If the forwards create a contest, who owns what happens behind it? If the defence wins the ball back, where does the responsibility for the next attacking decision begin?

Is the right question whether each assistant coach is performing his own role, or whether the football between those roles is connected strongly enough? Where are the handoffs supposed to occur? What evidence would show that stoppage, movement, forward play and defence are beginning to multiply rather than merely coexist?
