Richmond’s rebuild has produced plenty of individual moments worth noticing. A young player wins a contest, breaks a line, takes a mark or survives a difficult matchup and the natural question is whether that performance tells us something about his future. The full RTSSG member feature asks a harder question.
What if the most important value of a player is not confined to his own stat line? What if the better test is what becomes possible for the teammates around him when he is in the side?
How would Richmond identify that effect? Is it a midfielder whose presence changes another midfielder’s job? A defender who allows someone else to attack? A forward whose movement creates a chance he never touches? A ruckman whose work changes the next contest rather than merely the hit-out count?
And how do you separate a genuine multiplier from a player who looks better only when everybody around him is functioning? Can the same footballer be one in one role and not another? Does injury expose the answer when a missing player changes several jobs at once?
This matters because a rebuilding club cannot judge every prospect as an isolated development project forever. At some point Richmond has to know which combinations make the whole side stronger, which players reduce the workload of others and which roles still require the team to compensate around them.
Does that change how Richmond should think about selection, contracts and recruiting? When two players have similar individual output, should the decision turn on which one makes the next player better? What evidence would be strong enough to prove that rather than merely suggest it?
The source investigation puts Richmond’s list through that deeper test. Public can ask where the multiplier effect might exist and why it matters.
