When Richmond’s Game Plan Breaks Mid-Quarter, Who Fixes It on the Field?
Richmond knows who coaches its forward line, ball movement, stoppages and defence. The harder question begins when a match stops behaving like the plan Richmond prepared for during the week.
That was one of the revealing features of 2026. Richmond could compete strongly at the first contest, produce a good pressure quarter or hold an opposition pattern for a period, then find itself damaged when the same problem appeared again. A young team making mistakes is expected. A team repeatedly allowing the same mistake to reproduce raises a different question.
When an opponent changes a stoppage setup, finds the same exit twice, pulls Richmond too narrow or turns a turnover into a run of momentum, who recognises what has changed quickly enough to alter the next possession? The coaches can prepare hundreds of situations. They cannot physically make every correction from outside the boundary before the scoreboard moves.
That makes this more than a generic leadership discussion. Season 27 is asking whether Richmond has enough on-field football intelligence to diagnose a problem while it is happening, communicate the adjustment and stop one failure becoming three. It also raises a harder question about what disappeared with the premiership experience, what the next generation must learn, and what supporters should actually be able to see in 2027 if this part of the rebuild is improving.
The full member feature follows that puzzle without reducing it to who wears the captaincy or who talks the loudest. It asks where tactical organisation has to live inside a young Richmond side, who owns developing it, and what happens if the team remains dependent on instruction from the boundary.
