Richmond’s 1973 and 1974 premiership sides are remembered as powerful football teams, but the language surrounding them often goes further than that. They were hard. Confronting. Unpleasant to play against. A Richmond side opponents were supposed to feel before the ball was even bounced.
That reputation did not appear from nowhere. The Tigers had walked away from the 1972 Grand Final wounded by Carlton, then returned to an era in which revenge, physical pressure and football authority became tangled together.
