Tom Lynch’s Richmond record is already established. The more immediate question is not whether supporters can recite what he has done, but what another season with an experienced key forward would allow the next Richmond forward line to become.
Would one more Lynch season primarily buy performance, development time, structural protection or clearer evidence about the younger talls around him? Could it do several of those things at once? And what would Richmond need to learn during that overlap for the year to have genuinely advanced the rebuild?
Which younger forward would receive what role? Who needs to learn beside Lynch rather than behind him? What happens if availability again limits the number of games Richmond gets with its intended forward group together? Does the presence of a senior focal point clarify the next structure, or can it postpone decisions the club eventually has to make?
There is also the question of timing. What should Richmond know about its forward architecture by the end of 2027 that it does not know now? Which uncertainty is acceptable, and which uncertainty would represent another year without enough evidence?
