What Did Richmond Learn When Soccer Came to Tigerland in 1951?

On the King’s Birthday holiday in 1951, Richmond played Melbourne at the MCG while England played Australia in soccer at Punt Road, only a short walk away.
That is already a strange Tigerland picture: two football codes, two major crowds and two grounds operating almost side by side on the same afternoon.
The easy version is a code-war curiosity. The more interesting part is what Richmond did when international soccer arrived directly inside its own footprint, how the competing attractions behaved and what Punt Road was worth when it was not being used for VFL football.
Even the surviving crowd figures do not agree neatly, which makes the day harder to reduce to a simple tale about one code beating another.
Was soccer a threat to Richmond, an opportunity, or evidence that Tigerland had always been bigger than one football code?
