There is a point in an AFL game when two quick opposition goals stop being two isolated scores and start changing the conditions of the contest.


Field position shifts. Richmond begins retreating. The next clearance matters more. A manageable game can accelerate before the scoreboard fully explains what has happened.


Good sides usually possess some way of interrupting that acceleration, even when their preferred football has temporarily disappeared. Richmond’s 2026 season repeatedly raised the question without providing enough evidence of a dependable answer.
