SEASON 27: Richmond’s Best 23 Needs a Velvet Rope. When Does Getting a Game Become Hard Again?
Richmond spent 2026 using opportunity as part of the rebuild. Injuries, experimentation and a deliberately young list meant selection often moved because the club needed to learn, not because somebody had clearly forced another player out.
That can make sense in a development year. It also creates a much harder question for 2027: when does opportunity have to become competition?
If Richmond is genuinely getting deeper, healthier and clearer about roles, a place in the senior side should eventually become harder to win. But where should that squeeze arrive first? Which roles are close to becoming locked, and which still need movement because the evidence is not strong enough yet?
That is the puzzle. The member feature tests Richmond’s emerging Best 23 against role security, availability, youth development and internal pressure without assuming that the answer is simply to pick older players or freeze the side.
