Richmond Won the 1943 Flag — But What Kind of Era Did It Actually Belong To?

Richmond’s 1943 premiership can look strangely detached from the rest of the club’s story. It was won in wartime, at Princes Park rather than the MCG, and it was followed by a Grand Final loss in 1944 and then a 24-year wait for the next flag.

Read backwards from 1967, that can make 1943 look like a brilliant interruption. Read from the Richmond that had already won premierships, built champions and established itself as a major VFL club, and the historical question becomes much harder.

So where should the 1943 premiership actually sit in Richmond history, and what does its place tell us about the club Richmond had already become before the long wait began?
