Richmond finished the 1962 home-and-away season 5–13, eighth in a 12-team competition and nowhere near the VFL’s final four.

Then the eight non-finalists entered the league’s night competition at Lake Oval. Richmond beat Fitzroy, North Melbourne and Hawthorn and won the night premiership.

It was not the VFL premiership, and pretending otherwise would miss the point. The puzzle is why a five-win side could repeatedly answer sudden-death pressure once the competition changed shape.

The question Tiger supporters should be asking is simple: what changed when the sun went down?
