Richmond Knows Which Way the Sash Runs. Does It Know When That Became the Rule?
Richmond’s sash feels permanent now: black jumper, yellow diagonal, left shoulder to right hip. Yet its early history was far less tidy.
Richmond’s own historical material says the sash arrived in 1914, and one account adds a wonderfully human detail: players were supplied black jumpers and attached the yellow strips themselves. Mixed sash directions were therefore possible on the same team.
Then the club standardised the design. That is where the archive stops agreeing.
One official Richmond account places the decision in 1918. Other club histories place the switch in 1919. Both versions sit inside Richmond’s own record, and neither should simply be discarded because one date is neater.
The difference may prove to be a decision-versus-implementation issue. It may not. Until the underlying evidence settles it, the famous jumper carries a small unresolved historical seam.
