Richmond’s Biggest Bets Are Harder to Judge Than Their Results
Richmond’s history is full of decisions that looked enormous at the moment: changing competitions, moving grounds, trading champions, borrowing from tomorrow, chasing stars and concentrating draft capital into a rebuild.
Looking backwards makes them easy to sort into wins and disasters. That is also the trap. A decision can be rational and fail; another can be reckless and get lucky. A player can be excellent and still cost too much. A gamble can save a club and leave the next administration with the bill.
The usual supporter argument asks only whether the decision worked, and therefore tells us less than we think.
What should Richmond supporters actually measure when the club makes a bet big enough to change the next five years?
That question connects decisions normally discussed as separate chapters without letting hindsight do all the judging.
