Richmond Paid Pick 99 for Patrick Retschko. Did It Find a Recruiting Shortcut for 2027?

Patrick Retschko cost Richmond pick 99. By the end of 2026, he had played 18 AFL games. That makes the transaction look clever. It does not yet tell us what Richmond actually found.

The more useful question sits behind the bargain. Retschko arrived after development inside Geelong's system, with AFL traits already taking shape but a senior pathway that had not opened. Richmond bought more than a name at the back of the draft order; it bought a player further along the development curve than a fresh draftee.

Was that a one-off opportunity, or has Richmond exposed a repeatable market for 2027 — young, developed players blocked inside stronger systems who can be acquired without spending premium draft capital? The member feature tests where that idea works and where it becomes dangerous.
