Richmond Lost the 1942 Grand Final by 53 Points. What Changed Before the Five-Point 1943 Flag?
The neat version of Richmond’s 1943 premiership says the Tigers were humiliated by Essendon in 1942, learned the lesson, improved, and came back a year later to win the flag. The actual season was much less comfortable.
Richmond finished on top only on percentage. Essendon beat it again in the 1943 second semi-final. The preliminary final against Fitzroy was level at three-quarter time. Then Essendon led the Grand Final at the final change.
That turns the five-point premiership into a different question. Richmond had not made Essendon’s football disappear. It had to find a way to survive it, answer it and eventually make its own strengths matter when the same old problem returned under Grand Final pressure.
