Richmond’s Greatest Third Quarter Came in a Wooden-Spoon Season. How?

Richmond’s greatest third quarter did not come from a premiership team. It came from the side that finished last in 1989.

Against Footscray at the MCG, a ten-point half-time lead became a 74-point three-quarter-time advantage after Richmond kicked 11.5 to 1.1 — still the club’s highest third-quarter score in VFL/AFL history.

The contradiction is what makes the record interesting. Seven days later, at the same ground, Richmond had one goal at half-time against Melbourne and lost by 61 points. By season’s end it was 14th.

What does a record quarter mean when the team that produced it could not make that level of football repeatable?
