Richmond Gets Another $350,000 of Football-Department Room. What Should It Actually Buy?
Richmond will have another $350,000 of AFL football-department soft-cap room in 2027. That sounds like more help for a rebuild. It also creates a much harder question: what, exactly, should the club buy with it?
The easy assumption is that more spending capacity automatically means a better football department. But every club receives the same lift, Richmond already has specialist coaching and high-performance structures, and the 2026 season exposed problems that money alone cannot diagnose.
So where is the missing return: senior football expertise, development, coaching development, data-to-decision capability, VFL infrastructure, high performance — or something Richmond should deliberately refuse to buy? The member feature follows the extra money all the way to the football consequence.
