John Shearer Never Played a Senior Game. So Why Is His Richmond Story So Hard to See?
John Garnet Shearer does not appear in Richmond’s senior games record. Yet in 1943, the year Richmond won the VFL premiership, he was playing in the Tigers’ reserves while training for RAAF aircrew service.
Two years later, Warrant Officer Shearer was lost on operations in the Mediterranean on 7 April 1945, aged 20. His name is commemorated on the Malta Memorial.
That combination leaves an awkward gap in the way football history works. Senior appearances create permanent statistical trails. Reserve football often does not. A young man can spend time inside a club’s playing system and still become difficult to find once the senior ledger takes over.
Shearer’s story is not an argument to invent the career he never had. It is a reason to look more closely at what the archive chooses to preserve.
