If Jack Dyer Didn’t Invent the Drop Punt, What Exactly Did He Change?
Jack Dyer and the drop punt have been joined in football folklore for so long that the story often arrives as a settled fact: Captain Blood invented the kick.
The historical record is less convenient. Earlier versions existed, and Dyer’s own account does not sit neatly with the origin story later generations attached to his name.
That sounds as though it should reduce his place in football history. It does not automatically do so. Removing the easy label exposes a different problem: football techniques rarely appear fully formed, and influence is not the same thing as being first.
That is where the famous shorthand stops being useful.
So once the invention claim is stripped away, what exactly belongs to Jack Dyer?
The surviving evidence turns one of Richmond’s most familiar legends into a much less familiar football-history problem.
