A rebuild necessarily gives young footballers room to make mistakes. Richmond has done exactly that, and a club this young could hardly operate any other way.
But what is the team paying while those lessons are being learned? If one defender needs protection, who changes his role? If a midfielder cannot yet defend every phase, who absorbs the extra work? If a forward cannot consistently turn poor entries into neutral contests, where does the next problem appear?
How much accommodation is normal development, and when does it begin changing what the other 22 players can do? Are all young players costing the team in the same way? Can one player’s growth actually make another player harder to assess?
The uncomfortable question is not whether Richmond should stop developing players. It is how the club measures the price of development while still trying to build a functioning team.
