A former Richmond teammate later remembered George Rudolph standing in the forward line during a 1925 match in Sydney with a cigarette in hand. According to the recollection, Rudolph marked one-handed, collided with the field umpire, kicked the goal and only then helped the umpire back to his feet.
It sounds too perfect to be true. But the contemporary record confirms that Richmond played New South Wales that afternoon, won by 18 points, a Richmond player knocked down field umpire Barnett in the first quarter, Barnett had to be replaced temporarily, and Rudolph was among Richmond’s goalkickers.
So where does documented history end and Richmond folklore begin? How much of Vic Thorp’s later account can actually be checked — and why does the story remain so believable when placed beside what Jack Dyer and others said about Rudolph?
