Checker Hughes Won Richmond’s 1932 Premiership — So Why Was It His Last Game as Coach?

Frank “Checker” Hughes knew Richmond’s premiership standard before he ever coached it. He had played in the 1920 and 1921 flags, then returned as senior coach and took the Tigers to Grand Finals in 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1931 without winning one.

By 1932, Richmond was no longer trying to prove it could reach the last Saturday. It was trying to escape the identity created by repeatedly falling short. Hughes finally did it when the Tigers defeated Carlton by nine points.

Then comes the part that makes the story worth reopening: the Grand Final was Hughes’s last game as Richmond coach. Why did the man who had just solved the club’s most visible problem leave at the moment his work appeared to have been vindicated?
