He reminded me of a colt; all legs and untapped talent when he was first recruited. He was a marvel to watch and he was Richmond , Richmond, Richmond. He spat the dummy because he cared so much about our club. An all time great and one of the very best players to ever play .

After the euphoria of beating Essendon the week before even playing the following week was a bonus. My Geelong supporting sister and I caught a train then a bus to that dreary ground and right from the opening bounce Tiges were goners. I enjoyed sparring with the Cats fans and I did sing the Tigers song even after the big loss. We trudged back to the bus, my sister was happy , I was not. It is always great to beat that provincial team now and 2017 was particularly wonderful.

Sun was out when we arrived that day at Waverley and then the heavens opened. As you said Peter could and wet and miseracble, but hearing the supporters sing the theme song was a major highlight and enjoyable.

Richmond has had and has great players but KB is my all time hero. Nicknamed "Hungry," he certainly was. I watched the highlights of this premiership on then HSV7's footy replay but can't recall the goal: too young, I suppose. However, I do remember how 'slippery' KB could be around the opposition and kick magnificent goals. Dustin has the same ability.

Peter, throughout the 1980s and 1990s lots of my older Tiger work colleagues hated Graeme Richmond for sacking Tommy Hafey. GR's name was mud. I'm not suprised Tommy was there at GR's end.

Oh dear Michael Pickering. When you left Richmond so did my first nephew who bowed to his cousins' pressure and became a Cats supporter. You were his hero. Never mind. I do remember that terrible game in Geelong where Cats prevailed by close to 200 points but Tigers did exact revenge throughout the years, especially in the 2020 premiership.

Terry Wallace: I didn't like his idea of a 5 year plan for Richmond (corporate BS speak) and didn't like his strategy of playing keepings off/possession footy. I remember a few games where Matthew Knights played this style with his team mates, a few minutes before the final siren: not good. Yes, Tigers won but not in the way I would have liked.

Matthew, very well written. I agree with your term "thuggery." Thankfully, football rules have changed for the better. I cannot understand why Tasmania's State Government sponsors Hawthorn instead of their own state AFL team. Yes, it's all about money. I read a while ago that Tasmania lacks a 'decent sized' stadium. This is BS. BTW Danny Frawley should have realised that Elwood Beach is basically all reef.

I understand Trent's comment and consider myself one of these supporters. I've never abandoned my team, but stuck with them since my earliest memories. For 30 years I've proudly worn yellow and black in Bali and tolerated the ex-pats' stirring, most are WC supporters. However, they kept their mouths shut 2017-2019 as Richmond was a powerhouse and I got my own back. My Tigers did this for me. 2020 - pandemic so no travel. However, I agree with the above post and cannot tolerate those supporters who make themselves known when our team is doing well. I believe it was ex-Captain Wayne Campbell who stated: "There's nothing worse than a fickle supporter."

Well said! We’ve changed playing style a few times over the past decade and still are bottom of free kicks against. At the very least the AFL needs to know we are watching and they and the umpires are accountable for such a long time discrepancy in our free kick count. How do we compare to other teams? Do they go up and down or do some teams have a long term very positive count? Its about impartial decision making and fairness

Dustin will always be Dustin. I've not seen his eyes as I've never been close enough but his arm, warning opponents to steer clear, is what I remember most, especially when he's intent on a goal or a good passing kick. Dustin has experienced a few tough years. Peter Arthur's suggestion Dustin do a 'private' interview with Richo will make the Tiger supporters happy. It's entirely up to Dustin. Whatever he decides will simply have to be. Either way, Dustin will go down in Tiger history.

Totally agree. I have commented over past weeks. The same questions. Can play but simply not doing it and not looking interested. He isn’t what we need, we need our high paid players to be match winners or at least capable of impacting the game. Too many times when we have needed him in past weeks, he has missed goals, made poor decisions, given up a chase, simply not been there.
Take what is rumoured from Freo and let him go I think👍🐅

Surprise, surprise, AFL shafting Richmond again.
Seems to me there is a vendetta going on at Head Office against clubs that are successful in all aspects of their football development.
AFL want equalization, however manipulate the draw to ensure the clubs sitting in the 8 at the half way mark of the season have the best time slots, leaving the cellar dwellers to get the dregs of date & times ensuring their supporter base is left with no gate takings due to poor attendance etc.
The AFL hierarchy need to get their hands dirty & get amongst the fans to listen to constructive criticism & stop this job for the boys mentality.
NO FANS, NO FOOTBALL

Strike while the iron is hot, all players in question will require favourable clubs to pay top price plus more.. 1-2 years time is a long period in AFL in which while the cards stack against us in player quality and depth now they stack highly in out favour with youth and future trade quality players that are attractive to the top 5/6 sides for an instant injection. Youth bring culture also brings challenges however not often do chances come along where you can shape a complete side altogether at once.
It’s easier to push down hill than it is to push in sand.. youth although egar and driven will always follow the path of less resistance in order to get the desired outcome.
Trade value players now no matter the name or what may come… increase the value of youth and allow the processes in place prosper!! Clear salary and when time is right game changing players will come!

The fact that talls and key positional players take longer to develop seems to never rain clear in people’s minds, freaks 1ce in a life time bigs do what Buddy did and hit the ground running a bit like Harley Reid.. Buddy done it over a period Reid has done it in 1 season, if 1 season makes your career then correct me if I’m wrong Buddy had 10 careers and Lynch has had 4…. Last 2 years injuries yes… 6 years ago his 26 years old… as a midfielder you say he has 3 good years left with the expectations.. As a forward they have only just grown into their playing weight x match fitness with forward craft working in their favour.
21 is where most start making their case for selections 23 is when they start to cement their position but here’s the catch, they don’t develop without the senior player there with them.. its not until 25-27 do they become the top dawg which will service you well for 7-10 years.
35-37 is not out of reach for any key positional player, this being said 26/27/28/29 Toms already played the key role with Jack playing the 2nd.. meaning Tom is well in front of most key forwards.. putting him into the elite status even missing 2 seasons when we will have a 32 year old 30 year old Tom Lynch that is as fresh as a daisy!
If we drafted/traded players due to injury we wouldn’t have a game to play..
At the very lease they only possible reason to realise Tom is to free up 1.3m, and with so profile players not continuing on in 25 I think our 15m salary will not even get close..
Tom stays until 36-37 kicks another 300

Great article! By far the best written piece I’ve read covering all aspects of “loyalty” from both sides of the bar! For me personally my loyalty lies in the members officials and staff that help drive this great club into the future, I will never discourage growth or moving forward by any involved, having read this article however gives me a broader outlook on presenting myself and not to judge a picture from whom painted it. Rather enjoy the picture for its beauty as it may not be there tomorrow!!!
Thank you RTSSG for a masterpiece

👌👌👌 I couldn’t have written this better myself, add in a few party tricks along the way get a couple pushed up the order and some 2 year handy on-field mentors along the way in trades that assist rival clubs land the catch their also chasing at a cost of next to nothing.

For so many good players to want out, the club needs to review why. It’s extremely rare for so many experienced players to request a trade at the same time. Hard questions need to be asked why is this happening. I think the club needs a full review on how we can go from one of the best in the competition to the worst in a couple of years. I understand we have been crippled by injuries and huge retirements but so have the other clubs that are still playing finals.

Hi bill, Pete always leaves it open for asking questions and offering thoughts whether to yourself or publicly, which coincidentally is the question RFC is also pondering.. vocal or in-house until becomes a requirement.
Why leave, why now, why senior players?? Answer is simple.. opportunity, financial, success, timing.
Can I get home? Yes
Financially better? Won’t be worse off with possible extension where I plan to settle after football and less travel seeing family and friends (kids foundation)
Success, 4 years time with older players coming to end, many already gone, no Dusty coming up as of yet.. seems further off than say Freo,GC,WC who’s fighting for finals or +3 years on our same scenario
Timing, In my prime worth chasing, worth trading if someone’s willing to pay required role, Richmond could do with opportunities brought forward on this and personal living arrangements and commitments become more important.
I have no doubt there has been open discussions between player&club since well before media seen anyone flying around or hearing about it,
Benny & Peg said 3 in 5, they built a list recruiting hard on required areas at costs that jeopardised the after, Taranto & Hopper deal put it 12-24 months back even more noticeable when struck by important injuries. Richmond has had rough times and some “headlines” over time but never in any history I’ve heard of, a place to bail from.
Which fits the article also… VFL could be effected which makes the situation more daunting but STRONG & BOLD! It’s definitely the right thing to do no matter the on-field results! Richmond will fight for you like Gibcus or they will help you to ensure your doing what’s best..
Liddzy broke my heart but club and Lidz knew what was right for both party’s.. Unfortunately that’s the cost of elite level sports and a franchise pushing for greatness!
They sit I support.

Taranto has been good when there, wouldn’t say great or the heights expected yet, drew 2 1st
Hopper, we underachieved unfortunately inconsistent games strung together by injury also has not helped the fact, also effectively 2 1st? I could be wrong.
Bolton, Rioli, Baker all consistent (Bolton not at the level he can although output is level) All premiership players, All played pivotal roles during the seasons, and not of them had the game Ora or influence then as they do now and for 3 years minimum each, 33-34 not out of reach…
To suggest the 2 contracted players are not/could not be as influential as hopper/taranto is ludicrous! Baker adds something special. He’s special honestly that hurt me more…
We want 2 1st + each of the contracted surely? Even if analysts say 1 maybe 2 each
Paired bolts/baker they say 3
I’d want 3 + consider requesting 3 + and a future 1st
However you look at it, T&H was an impulse reaction to allowing our list to age without contingency, shouldn’t have chased big name mids, simply wrong selection on where to fill with the $$,
Can’t allow our effectively list builders to not land BIG, chances are we have 1 crack at this, we miss then turn 5 years into 10..
Don’t entertain trading risk losing future talent with running deep, Top 40 show extremely good talent, even then wouldn’t be surprised if 74 hits a 200 gamer.
Ideally force the lesser F/S candidates to go at late 2nd early 3rd to reduce the effectiveness of this rookie list rule.
Either way strategy rests heavily on offers, if any and how deep we can push with total pick selections prior to starting draft.
Pick quantity inside top 30 will be an asset

If Bolton and Rioli go, be prepared for at least 3 grim winters, regardless of success at the draft, which is problematic. I doubt the finances of the Club can withstand that, given the reduction of supporters and sponsorship.
