Jack and his wife Sybil owned a milk bar in Church Street Richmond and it encompassed two shops. The milk bar and the store room. Jack jnr recalls the milk and bread given to a struggling family of 12 who lived near the Tigers Milk Bar run by Sybil and where Jack served kids on Saturday mornings before heading off to scare opponents witless in the afternoon.
Jack would jump on the tram only to be surrounded by eager kids of the area who wanted to escort their hero to the ground. Jack carried his famous number 17 jumper and the rest of his footy gear in an old time Gladstone bag and would give the kids a thrill by allowing them to carry it for him. He truly was “The Father” of Richmond.
